Battery storage

Buy energy when it is cheap. Use it when it is not.

A home battery stores electricity, from the roof or from cheap overnight tariff windows, and releases it during expensive peak hours. It is the single component that makes everything else in the home work harder.

How battery storage work, in plain English

No jargon and no assumed knowledge. This is the explanation to share with your people when they ask what they are actually buying.

  1. 1

It fills up when power is cheap

Electricity is cheaper overnight on a time-of-use tariff. The battery charges quietly in that window, whether or not the home has solar panels.

  2. 2

    It soaks up spare solar

If there are panels, daytime surplus that would otherwise be sold cheaply goes into the battery instead.

  3. 3

    It powers the evening

Between roughly four and eight in the evening, households use the most electricity and pay the most for it. The battery covers that period from energy bought or generated earlier.

  4. 4

    Nobody has to manage it

The system decides when to charge and discharge on its own. The household sees it in an app and otherwise carries on as normal.

What's included

  • A wall or floor mounted lithium battery sized to the household's real consumption pattern.

  • A hybrid inverter that coordinates solar generation, storage and grid import.

  • Automatic charging during off-peak tariff windows, even in homes without solar.

  • Optional backup circuits so essential sockets stay live during a power cut.

What it changes in an employee's home

Peak pricing stops biting

Evening peak is when households use the most power and pay the most for it. A battery covers that window from cheap stored energy.

Solar stops being wasted

Without storage, most daytime generation is exported for a fraction of its value. With storage, it powers the evening.

Works without a roof array

Even on its own, a battery charging on an off-peak rate reduces the average price the household pays per unit.

Is your home suitable?

Storage suits more homes than solar does, because it does not need a roof. It needs somewhere dry to sit and a household with a decent evening electricity load.

Usually a good fit

  • You own the property, or you have the owner's written consent.
  • A garage, utility room, loft or plant space with a spare wall or floor area.
  • A meaningful evening electricity use, or an electric car, or both.
  • Interest in a time-of-use tariff, which is what makes the savings work.

Needs a closer look

  • Rented flats where nothing can be fixed to a wall. Plug-in solar is the alternative.
  • Homes with no suitable space away from living areas.
  • Very low electricity users, where the saving may not justify the outlay. The quote will show this honestly.

Yes, or entirely on its own

The saving depends on the size of the battery, the tariff and how much electricity the household uses in the evening. A battery on a time-of-use tariff saves money even with no panels on the roof.

Do I need solar panels to have a battery?

No. A battery on its own still saves money by charging during cheap overnight hours and powering the home through expensive evening ones. Solar simply gives it a second, free source to fill up from.

How long does a home battery last?

Typically 10 to 15 years of daily cycling, and the manufacturer's warranty covers a guaranteed capacity over a set number of years. That warranty is included in the quote.

Will it power my house in a blackout?

It can, if backup circuits are fitted. Those keep essentials like the fridge, lights and broadband running. It is an option on the quote rather than something every install includes.

Where does the battery go?

Usually a garage, utility room, loft or an outside wall in a weather-rated enclosure. It is roughly the size of a small radiator or a tall cupboard, depending on capacity.

Is it safe inside a home?

Yes. Certified home batteries have multiple layers of protection built in, are installed to UK standards by accredited electricians, and are sited away from living and sleeping areas.

What size battery do I need?

It is sized to the household's actual consumption pattern rather than sold as a package. Oversizing wastes money and undersizing leaves savings on the table, so the design starts from the real numbers.

Does a battery need maintenance?

No routine maintenance. Firmware updates arrive automatically and the app flags anything that needs attention.
